How to Handle Early Rising

Early rising is when baby wakes up before 6:00am ready to start the day. For some parents, that’s just fine. But for others (like me), that’s too early. Here are some common causes of early rising and what you can do about it.

Lack of daytime sleep resulting in a buildup of cortisol

  • follow wake windows and try to get enough naps in to lower cortisol throughout the day

Bedtime is too late, also resulting in a cortisol buildup

  • move bedtime earlier to prevent too much cortisol interrupting nighttime sleep

Food sensitivity causing discomfort at night

  • limit foods that cause gas and check for allergies with your doctor

Developmental milestone causing baby to want to practice new skills

  • encourage lots of practice of new skills throughout the day

Medical issue such as sleep apnea

  • check with your pediatrician to rule out any medical conditions that could be causing early rising
